With the recent warm weather, many more flowers are now blooming in the priory and woodland gardens. Come along and see them, Wednesdays to Sundays, 10am to 4pm.
Yesterday the Mayor of Guisborough, Alma Thrower, unveiled the 900th anniversary mosaic in Gisborough Priory. Among the special guests were Helen Gaunt and Derek Mosey (the artists who designed the mosaic), Sally Wilson (English Heritage) and Lord Gisborough.
An appreciative crowd of visitors was full of admiration for the mosaic and found out more about its design from Christine Clarke (secretary of Gisborough Priory Project).
This was our first open day of 2020 and the sun came out to welcome over 400 visitors who braved the windy conditions to admire not only the mosaic, but also the thousands of snowdrops and other spring flowers in the woodland gardens.
Refreshments were available to visitors as well as snowdrops and winter aconites sold by Mike Heagney. Almost £480 was raised from refreshment sales and visitor donations – a wonderful start to the year.
Today’s volunteer work session in the woodland gardens and on the priory flower borders has been cancelled because of the bad weather. Hopefully the weather will improve so that we can get to work at the next scheduled session on Monday 17 February.
You can find more details about volunteer work sessions on site here.
Volunteers have been busy working in the gardens today, getting ready for Snowdrop Sunday and the re-opening of the Priory in March.
And there are plenty of signs that Spring is on the way…
The special mosaic created by the local community to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Gisborough Priory was installed in the Priory recently and looks marvellous.
The design features many elements from the Priory’s history in a colourful and lively design.
You will be able to see the mosaic when Gisborough Priory reopens in 2020 – the first event will be Snowdrop Sunday on 23 February.
