Bluebells and baby birds

The blue tits are nesting in the hole in the wall near the entrance gate again this year. If you are lucky you will see them flying to and fro.

And there is a duck with lots of ducklings waddling about in the woodland. With birdsong ringing through the trees, and the bluebells and wild garlic blooming, there is much to rouse the senses.

Mosaic making

The Klondike Race came to Guisborough on Sunday 14 April and we welcomed more than 500 visitors to Gisborough Priory during the day.

Lots of visitors helped to add pieces to the mosaic that is being made to celebrate the 900th anniversary of Gisborough Priory’s foundation. The mosaic has been designed by local artists, Derek Mosey and Helen Gaunt, pictured above.

There is still plenty more to do to finish the mosaic so come along to the Priory Pageant on Saturday 15 June and make your mark on this lasting memorial that will be set up in the priory later in the year.

Help to make a mosaic

On Sunday 14 April, Guisborough will be hosting the Klondike bike race. There will be lots of activities around the town centre, including the priory.

In the priory you can work alongside mosaic artists Helen Gaunt and Derek Mosey to help create a special community mosaic to celebrate 900 years of Guisborough Priory (proposed design pictured above). There will also be other children’s art activities on offer and a trail around the priory and gardens for children.

We would like to thank Tees Valley Community Foundation for the grant to pay for some of these activities so that they are free for everyone. Come along any time from 10am to 4pm to join in the fun.

Unfortunately, due to injury and other complications, neither the mountain bike taster sessions nor the soft archery are now able to be there on Sunday. But the art activities are still going ahead and you can explore the priory and enjoy the beauty of the spring gardens too.

A stitch in time

We had a visit from some members of the Guisborough Embroiderers’ Guild (Lynda Jamieson, Beryl Frank, Marion Calvert and Linda Danby) this morning. They showed us their ideas for a banner (designed by Sue Chipchase) commemorating the 900th anniversary of the foundation of Gisborough Priory – featuring flowers, shields, architecture and more. We are looking forward to seeing this idea take shape over the year.

Celebrations start for 900 years of Gisborough Priory

We started the celebrations at Gisborough Priory this morning when Lord Gisborough unveiled a new timeline display charting events in the 900 years since the foundation of Gisborough Priory. The timeline runs around the inside of the information hut on the priory site. The content can be seen here.

Everyone was impressed by the colourful and informative display. It will now be on permanent display in the priory for all visitors to see.

In honour of the start of this anniversary year, volunteers and guest were also treated to a special cake.

The timeline has been designed by local PR and marketing agency, DTW who worked on this project free of charge. We would like to thank them for their generosity, expertise and enthusiasm.
